Age: 4 years old
Gender: Male
Diagnosis: Mild autism, verbal apraxia, pervasive
developmental delay, history of obsessive compulsive
disorder, hyperauditory, difficulty potty-training
We started the client listening to the A tracks
only of CD 1 for 5 minutes, twice a day for two
weeks. He seemed to be doing fine with the headphones,
so we recommended increasing his listening time
to 10 minutes, A and C tracks only of CD 1, twice
a day for two weeks.
After 2 weeks of listening 10 minutes, twice
a day, his mother reported that he was doing well
tolerating headphones and listening. He had begun
to tell mom when he needed to go potty. When they
were at a restaurant, he tried to sit and color.
Mom was thrilled, as this was new for him.
He continued through the remaining CDs in the
TLP Kit listening 10 minutes, twice a day, using
A and C tracks only for each session. After completing
8 weeks, the client's verbal skills were improving.
He was more emotional, more hyperauditory, and
wanted to be more independent. This was encouraging
as it meant that change was taking place.
He then went through 20 hours of TLP CDs 1-8,
Base Schedule, 15 minutes, twice a day. His mother
reported that his behavior and the sound hypersensitivity
had improved. He was better able to tolerate being
around other children. He even did okay at his
birthday party. He had started singing a lot and
his mother said, "He talks up a storm."
After repeating CD's 5-8 on the Base Schedule,
he was no longer hyperauditory at all. According
to his mom, this went "from out of control
to completely controlled." He was now talking
non-stop and was beginning to "talk back"
to his mother. He was still doing well with potty
training. Now he wanted to play with other children
and was using imaginative play. He was doing well
with reading skills and was asking a lot of questions.
He now loves music and is memorizing words to
songs easily.
After being off TLP for two weeks, he became
mildly hyperauditory again. He repeated the TLP
CDs 1-8, Base Schedule. After this cycle he was
very sociable compared to previously and was able
to be mainstreamed in school. He was still hyperauditory,
but only for loud sounds. We continued his listening
with the Sensory Integration CD, twice a day for
15 minutes for 4 weeks. This helped him to have
better control of himself when he was bothered
by loud sounds. His mom reported, "100% improvement"
and that he has exceeded her expectations for
change in the last year.
The next cycle started with TLP CDs 1-4, Base
Schedule, then, CDs 5-8 for one daily session
plus Speech and Language for the second 15 minute
listening session. This cycle improved his communication
skills and mom reported he "talks all the
time." He was learning new things well.
The client took a break and did not listen for
a month. However he became more hyperauditory
during this break. We began TLP CDs 1-8 on the
Extended Schedule. At CD 3, we added Sensory Integration
for the second session of 15 minutes. We also
added Music to De-Stress in the car on the way
to karate class as he was having difficulty tolerating
sounds in the class.
This is a good example of a difficult client
because he becomes hyperauditory again every time
he's off TLP. At the same time other areas of
development and function continue to improve consistently.
